Carl Sundquist

Both a track and road racer Carl Sundquist competed on the track at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics for the United States. He rode the team pursuit in 1988 and the individual pursuit in 1992. He won two gold medals in team pursuit at the Pan American Games, in 1987 and 1995. Sundquist was US National Champion in both individual pursuit and the points race in 1985-87. He was US National Champion in team pursuit in 1985, 1987, and 1995, and was second at the 1994 World Championships with the US team in team pursuit. On the roads his biggest accomplishment was placing second at the 1989 Red Zinger Classic stage race.

In 1985, Sundquist set a world record for human powered vehicles when he cycled in a recumbent over the 200 metre flying start course in 7.570 seconds, a speed of 95.11 km/hr (59.10 mph), which lasted, at low altitude, until 1998. Sundquist went to Butler University on a swimming scholarship, but left that sport after his freshman year and began to concentrate on cycling. After his Olympic appearances, Sundquist continued racing in masters’ events with Mercy Cycling Team, mostly on the roads.
