Biography

Matthias Wiegand was a track cyclist who won a silver medal with the East German pursuit team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. Four years earlier at Montréal his team came in fourth, losing the bronze match against Great Britain by only 0.34 seconds. In 1977 the team won the gold medal at the World Championships, winning the final against West Germany, and in 1978 the team won its second World title against the Soviet Union. In 1979 and 1980 Wiegand won the East German national title with SC Karl-Marx-Stadt. By profession, he was a sports teacher.
