Tim Lawson was the son of a Scottish schoolteacher, and because of his father’s nationality Lawson chose to play hockey for Scotland instead of his own country of birth, England. He was chosen for his Scottish début after impressing in a trial in 1963 – it what was only the third time he had been to Scotland. Lawson had two years earlier played for England schoolboys while at Felsted School.
An Essex County player, Lawson played his club hockey at the London side Tulse Hill. He also played for and captained the British Universities side during his time at university as a medial student at the London Hospital. Lawson was a member of the Great Britain team that finished 12th (out of 16) at the Mexico Olympics and scored the first Great Britain goal of the tournament, in the 2-0 win over Argentina. Shortly after the Mexico Games Lawson toured South Africa with the Dominoes touring side.
In 1988 Lawson guested for Old Felstedians against an International XI alongside fellow Olympians Richard Oliver and Tony Ekins, with all three having a combined aged more than 132 years. Lawson also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Rye Club in Kent.
