Biography

Romanian-born foil fencer Monika Weber-Koszto participated for her home country at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, as Romania was one of the few Eastern countries not following the Soviet-led boycott. She then won the team silver medal. In 1986, she defected to West Germany and competed for Germany at the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics and earned a foil team silver (1992), and two team bronze medals (1996 and 2000). Individually, her best result was fifth in 1996.

Weber-Koszto also won team gold at the 1993 and 1999 World Championships, as well as two bronze medals in 1995 and 1997. She also won individual bronze in 1997. At European Championships, she won an individual silver in 1999 and three bronze medals in 1991, 1995, and 1997. Domestically, she won national titles in 1998 and 2001.

Weber-Koszto married her teammate Ulrich Schreck but later divorced. In 2001, she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. After her active career she became a fencing coach.
