Biography

Former vice president of the German Fencing Association Dieter Fänger was known in the 1970s as a proponent of Tauberbischofsheim coach Emil Beck, who led his fencers into the world elite, but polarized many with his methods. Fänger, a former police detective and head of recognition service in Düsseldorf, was himself a fencer of international appeal. At the 1960 Roma Olympics he was on the German épée team that finished fifth. A year later he became German champion and was part of the squad for the World Championships in Gdansk, where he missed the singles final. Fänger died on 8 March 2016 at the age of 90 years.
