Biography

When Fabio dal Zotto competed at the Montréal Olympics, he was just 19-years-old and still studying in high school. In the final of the individual foil, he tied with Aleksandr Romankov, a 10-time World Champion, but soundly defeated him 5-1 in the barrage. Dal Zotto also took home the team silver.

While Dal Zotto won four World Championship medals over the next years (including three silvers with the team), he never reached his Olympic level of 1976 again. He missed the Moskva Games after leaving a training camp over an argument with a teammate, and as a member of the Italian military he was not eligible to compete in Moskva, and he was expelled from the 1981 World Championship team for undisciplined behavior.

After his competitive fencing days, Dal Zotto concentrated on studying, earning degrees in political science and sociology. He taught law and economics in high schools for many years and taught fencing courses.
