Biography

A Staffordshire horticulturist and fruit grower, John Jenkinson was educated at Haileybury College, Hertfordshire. An excellent fencer, he first attracted attention in 1899 when, as a pupil at Professor McPherson’s School of Arms, he won the Colmore-Dunne Challenge Cup, and the following year won the German Gymnastic Society’s foil gold medal. In 1904, Jenkinson became the first person to win the Amateur Foil Championship three years in succession. He was also the Auxiliary Forces foil champion and in 1905 and 1906 he entered the Sabre Championship, but finished second each time to the three-times champion Charles Wilson. At the 1908 London Olympics, foil was not part of the programme, but was a demonstration event. Jenkinson, and fellow Britons Millicent Hall and Robert Montgomerie, were three of the 22 competitors from 12 nations chosen to take part.

Jenkinson joined the Inns of Court Volunteers in 1888, before joining the Territorial Force at Tamworth upon its formation in 1908. He went on to become a captain in the 6th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, but lost his life when he was killed in action in France during a charge on the enemy in 1915.
