Biography

Robert Montgomerie appeared in the five Olympics between 1908 and 1928. He won two silver medals, both in the team foil event, in 1908 and 1912. Montgomerie was the British champion on nine occasions, winning the foil title in 1905, 1908-10, and the épée title in 1905, 1907, 1909, 1912, and 1914. In 1913 he became the first British fencer to win and open épée competition overseas, when he won the Le Touquet competition. Montgomerie represented Great Britain in the contest for the Thompson Trophy against the USA in London in 1923 and New York in 1926. Montgomerie was honorary secretary of the Amateur Fencing Association 1907-27. By profession, he was a barrister, like his father before him.
