Biography

German water polo goalie Santiago Chalmovsky won the bronze medal with the West German team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, playing only against Japan. In total, he won 41 international caps. Domestically, Chalmovsky played with Duisburger SV 1898, and was German Championship runner-up seven times in the 1980s.

Chalmovsky’s parents met on a ship to Argentina; his father was of Slovak origin who survived a communist concentration camp. His mother came from Saarland, which laid in ruins after World War II. Chalmovsky was actually born in Buenos Aires, and the family returned to Germany in 1964. Chalmovsky was later a trained translator and worked with a distribution company for steel products.
