Biography

Karl-Heinz Scholten began to play water polo at school, winning the national youth water polo championship with the German A team. In 1968 Scholten won the German championship with ASC Duisburg, before winning the German Cup four years later. After finishing his playing career, he then became a coach for DSV 98, leading their youth side to the German championship in 1978. With a successful domestic career under his belt, Scholten then coached the German national team, including at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He returned to the pool as a player, competing in Masters events, finishing as a runner-up at the 2000 World Championships, before winning the world title four years later. By the end of his career Scholten had won seven world titles, five European titles, and more than 20 national titles.
