Biography

Alf Hudson was the son of an Oxfordshire master butcher but did not go into the butchery business, becoming a French polisher and, later, a piano tuner instead. He was acknowledged as one of the best amateur swimmers in his day, but became better known as the official handicapper for the Southern Counties ASA for more than 35 years. He still held that position at the time of his death in 1928.

In addition to being the Southern ASA handicapper, Hudson was also a starter and timekeeper with them for over 30 years, and in 1908 was one of the starters for the swimming events at the London Olympics. He was also a water polo referee and regularly officiated at inter-county matches, and in 1924 took charge of the game between Sweden and Hungary at the Paris Olympics. Hudson was a past president of the ASA.
