Biography

Costică Bărăgan was a Romanian épée fencer who was a three-time national champion (1974, 1978, 1980). Bărăgan competed in the individual and team épée events at the 1972 München Olympics, finishing in fifth place in the latter along with teammates Constantin Duțu, Anton Pongratz, Alexandru Istrate, and Nicolae Iorgu.

Three years later at the 1977 Summer Universiade in Sofia, Bulgaria, Bărăgan was part of the team that won the gold medal. He fenced again at the Olympics, this time at the 1980 Moskva Games where the Romanian team narrowly missed out on a medal finishing in fourth place. The same year Bărăgan won the European Cup with Steaua București in Heidenheim.
