Biography

Miguel del Río was a Cuban basketball coach. In 1968 Del Río became the coach of the Provincial Basketball School, coaching boys aged 15 to 16. The following year Del Río coached the women’s team. Del Río continued to coach for the next 16 years with multiple successes, including the promotion of 20 athletes to high performance centres.

In 1979 Del Río was the assistant coach of the Cuban women’s team at the Summer Universiade in Mexico City. By 1984 he had been promoted to the national technical team. From 1993 to 1998 Del Río was the coach and technical head of the women’s national team. Del Río was the head coach of the women’s basketball team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In the 14 years that Del Río worked with the national women’s team, he had coached them in 773 matches, winning 602.

In 2000 Del Río was awarded with the Distinction Martyrs of Barbados. Five years later, Del Río was named in the Cuban Basketball Federation’s list of 100 Personalities of Cuban Basketball.

Outside of Cuba, Del Río coached the Real San Andrés in Division A in Colombia, and was the coach of the Guatemalan women’s national team for six years.
