Biography

Carles Costa was a Spanish tennis player who played professionally from 1988 to 1999. Costa was renowned as a clay court specialist, winning all his ATP and ITF titles on clay. He achieved a career-best singles ranking of 10 in the world in May 1992, and a doubles ranking of 40 in the world in September 1989.

Costa won his first ITF title in April 1990 in Zaragoza, beating Italy’s Francesco Cancellotti in straight sets. On the ATP circuit his first win was at the 1992 Estoril Open with victory over Sergi Bruguera. Costa would win six ATP titles and seven ITF titles during his career. His best Grand Slam performance came in the doubles at the 1989 French Open where he reached the quarter-finals. Costa played in the singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, losing to Andrea Gaudenzi in the first round.
