Biography

Emanuel Couto was a Portuguese tennis player who played professionally from 1990 to 2003. Primarily a doubles player, Couto achieved a career-best ranking of 91 in the world in September 1997.

Couto was part of Portugal’s Davis Cup team from 1994 to 2003 where he had a win-loss record of 13–5 in the doubles. During his career he often teamed with Bernardo Mota. The pair competed in the doubles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where they lost in the first round on each occasion. Couto won his only ATP doubles final with Mota at the 1996 Oporto Open in Portugal. At Grand Slam events Couto reached the second round of the French Open and Wimbledon in 1997.
