Horst Weigang

As the East German national team won the inter-national qualification matches in 1963 against the West German amateur national team by a 3-0 win in Leipzig and a 2-1 loss in Hannover, the German Olympic team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics was an East German one. The team won the bronze medal, beating Egypt, 3-1.

Goalkeeper Horst Weigang started his soccer career in 1954 at SC Rotation Leipzig. In 1961 he moved for one season only to SC Turbine Erfurt, then returning to Leipzig again. He then played for this club until 1967, when it was renamed SC Leipzig and eventually SC Lokomotive Leipzig. Finally he played with the current FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt until 1971. In total, he appeared in 234 Oberliga matches.

Weigang earned 12 international caps with the East German national team. After his retirement he became a coach in several smaller clubs in the Thuringia region. He also worked as a sports and social law teacher. His daughter Birte later became a world class swimmer and won one gold and two silvers at the 1988 Seoul Games. She later confirmed state-supported doping in the former GDR. His son Sven also became a goalkeeper, playing several years with BSG Stahl Riesa and Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin. Sven and his father Horst founded a football (soccer) school in Kleinmachnow in 2000.
