Biography

Heinz Günthardt was a Swiss tennis player who played professionally from 1976 to 1990. Günthardt won four Grand Slam doubles titles, achieving a career-best doubles ranking of three in the world in July 1985.

As a junior player Günthardt won both the boys’ singles at the French Open and Wimbledon in 1976. His first major singles title came two years later at the Springfield International Tennis Classic, with a further four more singles titles coming in the early 1980s. Günthardt specialised as a doubles player, winning 30 ATP title from 1979 to 1986, where he was often paired with Hungarian Balázs Taróczy.

Günthardt had an impressive record at Grand Slams. In the doubles he won the French Open in 1981 and Wimbledon in 1985. Also in 1985, he won the mixed doubles at the French Open and the US Open. He competed in the doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics with Jakob Hlasek with the pair reaching the second round. After his playing career Günthardt coached Steffi Graf from 1992 until her retirement in 1999. He also coached Jelena Dokic, Jennifer Capriati, and Ana Ivanović. He later went on to captain the Swiss Fed Cup team.
