Biography

Anja Wilhelm was a member of the West German female gymnastics team that finished a respectable fourth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She also placed 12th in the individual all-around but missed all the apparatus finals except on the balanced beam, where she finished seventh. Wilhelm went on to dominate German gymnastics for many years, and won the bronze medal on the balance beam at the 1987 European Championships in Moscow. In total, she won twelve individual national titles.

Wilhelm’s parents Gerti and Heiner were longtime trainers and coaches at her home club VfL Wolfsburg. She herself later studied psychologics, school subjects sports and German, and became a sports journalist.
