Biography

Otto Bauscher was the son of a German-born London jeweller, and Otto followed in his father’s profession and became a manufacturing jeweller. He took up wrestling in his teens and joined the famous German Gymnastic Society (GGS), where he was coached by the four-time Olympic champion Carl Schuhmann. Bauscher was runner-up to Frederick Richardson (brother of the Olympian Edward Richardson) at the 1904 GGS annual competition. Bauscher captured the prestigious title in 1906 and was third the following year, but had some consolation by taking the first prize in the pole jump (pole vault) competition.

Having competed at the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens, Bauscher made his second Olympic appearance at London in 1908, but finished a lowly joint-73rd in the individual all-round gymnastics competition. Bauscher went on to become the honorary secretary of the GGS, and during World War I served as a lieutenant in the RNVR (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve)
