Biography

Edgar Dyson took up competitive gymnastics with the Halifax Recreative Evening School (RES) in his teens and in 1903, at the age of 19, was in the team that gained a memorable win over Bradford All Saints in the semi-final of the Bradford and District Shield. Dyson enjoyed his greatest moment in 1905, however, when he was a member of the Halifax team that won the Adams Shield for the British Team Championship. In the final they beat Leith, the 1903 and 1904 champions. It was Halifax’s first triumph in the competition and, as the end of 2021, their only success.

Despite regularly winning the Bradford and Gymnastic Championship, and winning representative hours with Yorkshire, Dyson never repeated that 1905 Adams Shield success. He came close to winning the 1908 Yorkshire Amateur Championship, when he finished runner-up to that great Bradford gymnast Len Hanson.
