George Meade

George Meade was born in Abertillery, Monmouthshire, the son of Mary Jane and William Meade, a coal miner. He was a longtime member of Powell’s Tillery Gymnastics Club in his hometown of Abertillery, Monmouthshire and in 1908, was selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games as a member of the gymnastics delegation. Here, he competed in the individual event, placing 37th in a field of 96 competitors, scoring 205 points.

Meade moved to New South Wales, Australia around 1911 where he gained employment with the railway in Sydney. In 1916, he married Effie Gilbert, with whom he had one son. In his later years, his health failed and he was admitted to a sanatorium after contracting tuberculosis; he later died of the disease in July 1927 at his home in Orange, New South Wales at the age of 39.
