Biography

Back forward Sybille Gruner was a German handball player who was on the losing side in the third-place match at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when Germany lost 24-20 to the Unified Team EUN. After reunification Gruner won the gold medal at the 1993 World Championships and the silver medal at the Europeans the following year. She won 135 international caps and scored 296 goals.

Domestically, Gruner played in the former GDR with UT Erfurt (until 1983) and SC Leipzig (until 1990), helping them win the national title in 1984 and 1988, and the European IHF-Cup in 1986. She then moved to SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and won the German Cup in 1991 and 1992. After retiring in 2002, Gruner became an assistant coach and led the Regional Handball Center at Leverkusen. In 2020, she took over the German female Under-17 national team.
