Biography

Petra Platen was on the West German handball squad that finished fourth in the round-robin tournament at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She won 208 international caps and scored 355 goals. Domestically, she played with TuS Preußen Vluyn and later TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Platen studied biology and medicine at the University of Köln. From 1987-2005 she was a research assistant, assistant, academic advisor and senior counselor at the German Sport University of Köln. Since 2005 she has been the Professor for Sports Medicine and Sports Nutrition at the Faculty of Sports Science at the Ruhr University Bochum. Platen was also chairman of the Working Group on Safety in Sport.
