Biography

Ecuadorian athlete María Cangá was a talented judoka who competed in the half-heavyweight class. Cangá won bronze at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis, going one better at the 1991 Games in La Habana, winning silver after losing to Niurka Moreno.

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Cangá lost her only bout of the tournament to Katarzyna Juszczak of Poland in 10 seconds. Despite this early exit from the Games, Cangá had the honour of being the flag bearer for Ecuador at the Opening Ceremony in Spain.
