West German middleweight judoka Gerd Egger finished seventh at the 1972 München Olympics. He lost the repêchage round against French Jean-Paul Coche by Yusei-gachi. In 1967 he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany, for winning the Youth European Championship. Egger reached the 9th Dan.
Egger later became a youth coach and sports referee for the German Judo Federation from 1992-2012, and was also with the Bavarian Judo Federation. In 2012 he was elected president of the Bavarian Judo Federation.
