Biography

German half-heavyweight judoka Detlef Knorrek was eliminated in the pool stages both at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He burst onto the scene in 1986, winning the bronze medal at the Youth European Championships. In 1988, he added another bronze at the Students World Championships and, in 1991, a further European bronze.

Domestically, Knorrek won five German titles in the heavyweight class in 1987, 1991-93, and 1995. He was on the German team that won the gold medal at the European Championships in 1994 and 1995 and, in the second of those years, won the silver medal at the Worlds. Knorrek was also a German international rugby player. By profession, he became a teacher in sports and natural science at Hannover.
