Biography

Aside from his 1972 Olympic heavyweight bronze, Georgian Givi Onashvili also won the World Championships heavyweight bronze in 1969. At the European Championships, Onashvili won the heavyweight title in 1974 and the open class title in 1975. He also won heavyweight silvers in 1969, 1972 and 1976 and a heavyweight bronze in 1971. Domestically, Onashvili won the Soviet sambo (a Soviet wrestling style similar to judo) heavyweight title in 1970 and the Soviet judo heavyweight title in 1973.
