Biography

Judoka Torsten Reißmann finished fifth in the half-lightweight class at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, representing East Germany. Domestically, he won four national titles in 1975, 1978, 1980 and 1982, when he was also the European champion. He won a World Championships bronze medal in 1975.

Reißmann was a trained car mechanic, but later became a schoolteacher. He fell ill in 2001 with neuroborreliosis and could not work anymore. In the long term it was to be the cause of his death in 2009, as he suffered severely from progressive motor disabilities and paralysis.
