Biography

Rowers Dieter Wiedenmann, Michael Dürsch, Raimund Hörmann and Albert Hedderich made up the quadruple sculls crew at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, capturing the gold medal by just 0.43 seconds from Australia. Therefore, the crew was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. The crew also won a bronze at the 1978 World Championships, silvers in 1979 and 1982, and finally the gold medal in 1983, beating East Germany for the first time ever.

Nationally, Wiedenmann won quadruple sculls titles from 1978-84. By profession, he was a bank clerk. Sadly, he died at the age of 37, after suffering internal bleeding during an operation to stabilise his spine.
