Biography

Jerzy Skolimowski coxed the bronze medal winning fours as well as the silver winning pairs at Los Angeles in 1932. In 1928 he coxed the Polish eights and in 1936, the pairs and fours. He also won a silver medal at the 1933 European Championships in the coxed pairs.

Skolimowski also participated in Los Angeles in the art competitions in the paintings category. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology with the design of a velodrome and became a well-known architect and interior designer. He designed the interior of the Polish passenger liner MS Piłsudski and was co-designer of the Polish war cemetery at Monte Cassino in Italy. During World War II he fought in the Polish campaign against the Germans and later joined the Polish exile forces in Africa. He served in the Balkans as a Military Intelligence officer and was involved in preparing for the Allied invasion of Normandy, receiving multiple awards for his service.

Skolimowski later immigrated to the United Kingdom, where he worked as an architect and lecturer at the Polish Foreign University in London under the name of George Skolly. In 1966 he went to South Africa and designed the interiors of representative buildings. In 1979 he returned to Britain, dying in London, but he was buried in his home country.

Skolimowski received awards for poster designs. He produced his works submitted in 1932 together with his fellow rower Zbigniew Czech and with the artists Stefan Osiecki and Andrzej Stypiński, respectively. The Hockey Poster for the 1931 World Ice Hockey Championships in Krynica (now Krynica-Zdrój), a winter sports resort on the border with Slovakia, was created with Oiecki in 1930. The Ski Poster was probably created for the 1929 International Polish Ski Championships in Zakopane. This graphic also adorned the cover of the event catalog.
