Biography

After winning the Canadian Open Handgun Championship in 1958, one year after he began competitive shooting, Gary McMahon represented Canada at the 1959 Pan American Games, where he took home bronze medals in the 25m centre fire pistol and 50m free pistol team events. His next stop was the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he 11th in the free pistol, 50 metres and 39th in the rapid-fire pistol, 25 metres. After attending the 1962 World Championships, he defended his individual bronze medal at the 1963 Pan American Games, upgraded his team medal to silver, and also took silver in the 25m centre fire pistol team and individual 50m free pistol events. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he was 16th over 50 metres and 47th over 25 metres.

McMahon never attended the Olympics again, but he did win bronze in the 50m free pistol event at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. His final major international medal was silver in the 25m centre fire pistol team competition at the 1971 Pan Americans. Domestically, he won five open championships and three closed championships, and was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1982. By career, McMahon earned physics degrees from Brandon University and the University of British Columbia and worked in defense research.
