Biography

Robert Brown served as an armourer staff-sergeant and then quartermaster-sergeant in the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) for 22 years. Between 1895-1917 he served in the UK and India, where he married his wife Amy in 1903. After spending time back in the UK at the School of Musketry in Hythe, Kent, Brown was posted back to India (Rawal Pindi) in 1912. He was discharged in 1917 and took a civilian job. Sadly, within a year of leaving the Army, Brown died after contracting influenza.

As a competition shooter, Brown was useful with both revolver and rifle and was at one time a member of the “Army Sixty”, which meant he was amongst the top 60 shots in the British Army. He won the Roupell Cup at the 1909 Army Championships, and that same year finished fourth in “The Barlow”, a service rifle competition aiming at disappearing objects.
