Biography

James Reid joined the Gordon Highlanders before the outbreak of World War I and served with them until he was disabled out of the Army in February 1918. His rank at the time was sergeant.

During his time on the Gordons, Reid enjoyed a successful shooting career, regularly fared well at the annual Bisley Meeting, and won the silver cross as runner-up in the Grand Aggregate in 1905. He represented Scotland six times in the National Trophy match between 1909-23, and helped them beat England, Ireland and Wales to win the trophy in 1910. Reid also represented Scotland four times in the MacKinnon Cup match between 1910-20. Despite previously coming close to reaching the final 100 in the King’s Trophy, he achieved that aim in 1912 when he finished equal ninth behind winner Arthur Fulton, who captured the first of his three titles. Reid went to the Stockholm Olympics that year and won a silver medal with the Great Britain military rifle team. He was still competing in the King’s Prize in the 1920s, and reached the final again in 1923.
