Biography

John Sellars was educated at St Marys College Dundalk before going to Dublin to continue his medical studies where, in 1884, he qualified as a doctor. Among the many positions he held, Sellars was appointed medical officer to Ireland’s largest Benefit Society, the Irish National Foresters’. At his funeral procession in Dundalk in 1911, the town came to a standstill and 400 members of the Foresters’ walked in front of his hearse as his coffin was carried through the town.

Sellars was a popular figure on the shooting ranges of both Wimbledon and Bisley, and in 1901 he made the trip to the United States as one of the Irish representatives to compete in the match against the USA. Sellars won the individual prize

Although illness prevented Sellars from appearing at the 1911 Bisley Meeting he did, however, bow out with some memorable performances in 1910. He won The Bass and The Edge competitions, the two long distance events, and also represented Ireland in the Elcho Shield, for the 14th time in the 15 years he had been shooting. His score of 221 out 225 was the best of the tournament. Additionally, Sellars won the 1910 Hopton Aggregate, which meant he added the English title to the five Irish ones he had previously won.

Away from shooting, Sellars had many interests. He was a keen athlete as a youth, was a fine cricketer, and a one-time captain of the Dundalk Golf Club. He also had a passion for music and was a leading organist and chorister, and was one of the organisers of the Dundalk Orchestral Society
