Biography

Don Nygord attended Oregon State University where he competed briefly on the fencing and wrestling teams. After graduating in 1960 with a degree in chemistry, he joined the US Air Force where he discovered sport shooting, and would excel at it. He spent 22 years on the US national team and competed in shooting for over 30 years. Nygord won 16 national titles and four team championships with the US Army Reserve, and was a World Champion in air pistol. At one time, he held US records in five different pistol events. Nygord won 18 medals at the Pan American Games, equalling the US record also held by Lones Wigger. These included 12 gold medals, with three individual gold medals – in air pistol in 1979 and 1987, and a centre-fire pistol gold in 1991.
