Biography

Allan Wood was an Australian freestyle swimmer. Wood swam at the 1960 Roma Olympics in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay, with the Australian team winning the bronze medal. As Wood only swam in the heats, however, he was not awarded a medal. Two years after the Olympics, Wood was part of the Australian team that competed at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth. Wood won an individual silver and bronze at the Games, along with a team gold in the 4 × 220 yards freestyle relay, with the relay team setting a world record in the process. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics Wood won two individual bronze medals, the first in the 400 metres freestyle and the second in the 1,500 metres freestyle. Wood retired from swimming after the Tokyo Games and became a coach.
