Biography

Carla Galle began her career as a swimmer, winning a bronze medal at the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo before being selected to represent Belgium at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. She also set several national records.

After her sporting career, Galle became the party secretary of the sp.a where she met Socialist politician Karel Van Miert, who became her partner. From 1991 to 2013, Galle was the head of Bloso, the Flemish sports administration.

In 1994, Galle was caught up in the Augusta scandal, a political scandal in Belgium regarding a defence procurement contract for August helicopters. Along with other members of her party, Galle was charged with forgery, but she was eventually acquitted by the Court of Appeal in 2003.
