Biography

Helge Vasenius took up diving in 1934, when he was 7-years-old and had a very long diving career, competing until the 1980s, when he was well over 50. Internationally Vasenius competed at three major tournaments – the 1952 Olympics, finishing 14th on springboard; the 1954 European Championships, placing 7th on springboard; and the 1956 Olympics, where he was 15th on springboard and 16th on platform. Vasenius won six Nordic Championships, the last ones in 1974 and 1980. He also won 36 Finnish titles, the last two of them in 1974. Outside of sports, Vasenius worked for more than 40 years, from 1949-90, with Veikkaus Oy, the Finnish national betting agency, as a chauffeur, purchasing agent and janitor.
