Biography

Although she swam and dived for the Everton Swimming Club, close to her Liverpool home, Margaret Bisbrown, was a representative of the Birmingham Amateur Diving Club when she took part in major diving competitions. A Northern Counties diving champion, she never won a national title, but was third in the springboard championship in 1936 and 1938, and second in 1939. Selected as a reserve for the Great Britain team in the highboard event at the 1938 European Championships, she was a member of the 1948 London Olympic squad and finished 10th of 15 starters in the platform competition, the highest placed of the three British divers.

Her diving career could well have ended in the summer of 1947. While attempting a reverse dive form the 16-foot board at Hastings, Bisbrown struck her head on the board and fell into the water with cuts to her head and a suspected fractured skull. Fortunately, it was not a serious as it first appeared. In 1941 Margaret married Arthur Day, an accountant with the Bootle Borough Treasurer’s Office in Merseyside.
