Having won the junior and senior Hampshire County diving titles in 1955, Southampton´s Tony Kitcher was third in the ASA National Boys´ Diving Championship in 1956 when Brian Phelps won the title. Despite having to live in the shadow of Phelps throughout his career, Kitcher still went on to win many international caps, the first being against Russia in 1958.
Kitcher´s finest moment came at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Perth, Australia, when he won the platform bronze medal. He had previously reached the platform final at that year´s European Championships at Leipzig. In 1963 Kitcher won his only ASA title, largely due to the absence of the then five-times champion Phelps, who was recovering from a motorcycle accident a month before the Championships. Also in 1963, Kitcher narrowly missed a medal at the European Diving Championships when he finished fourth. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he failed to make the final eight after finishing 16th in the qualifying competition.
