Biography

English swimmer Raymond Terrell had an impressive record at the British Commonwealth Games in the 1970s, winning seven medals. In 1968 Terrell was selected to represent Great Britain at the Mexico City Olympics, swimming in the 200 and 400 individual medley, and the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay, finishing 10th in the latter. Two years later he represented England at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, winning four medals. Individually he won silver in the 200 metres backstroke and the 400 metres medley, along with bronze in both the 4 × 100 and 4 × 200 metres freestyle relays. A month after the Games he became the British champion in the 400 metres freestyle.

Terrell was well on course to compete at the 1972 München Olympics, spending nine months of training in the United States. Just weeks before the Games, however, he was unceremoniously dropped from the British team following a drugs raid on his room. Terrell denied the allegations, appealing against them straight away, and was cleared of any wrong-doing a few months later. The British Amateur Swimming Association confirmed that he would once again be eligible for selection for future competitions.

In 1974 Terrell returned to the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch where he won silver in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay, and bronze in the 400 metres medley and the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay. Terrell also won two further British titles during his career with the 200 metres medley title in 1972, followed by the 400 metres medley title in 1974.
