Biography

Backstroke specialist Joachim Rother reached the final of the 200 metres event at the 1968 Mexico-City Olympics. He placed seventh eventually and swam for SC Karl-Marx-Stadt (after reunification renamed to Chemnitz). He also won the bronze medal at the 1966 Europeans at Utrecht in this event. In 1965 and 1967 he won East German titles in the 200 metre backstroke, and in 1967 also won the 100 back. Rother later became a successful swimming coach.
