Biography

Frank Wiegand was born in Dresden and started in 1960 and 1964 for the combined German team, and in 1968 for the East German team. He was elected East German Athlete of the Year in 1966. He won four Olympic silver medals, three in 1964, in the 400 free and both freestyle relays, and in the 1968 medley relay. Besides his Olympic medals he won one gold and two bronze medals at the 1962 European Championships and three golds and two silver medals in 1966.

Wiegand studied sports science and would become a coach in Potsdam. But because of critical statements about the East German government, he was re-deployed to a labour union. After the reunification of Germany he made his living as a real estate manager situated at Zeuthen near Berlin.
