Biography

Birgit Kowalczik was a West German long-distance freestyle swimmer who finished seventh in the 400 metres at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She also placed 11th overall in the 800 metres event. In 1983, Kowalczik won a silver medal in the 4x200 freestyle relay at the European Championships.

Nationally, Kowalczik won the 400 metres titles in 1982 and 1986, and the 800 and 1,500 metres title in 1984. She later worked with a company involved in environmental engineering.
