Biography

Due to the US-led boycott of the Western countries, West German swimmer Andreas Behrend could not participate in the Moscow Games. Four years later at Los Angeles, as a butterfly specialist, he reached the 100 metres final but only finished seventh. Over 200 metres he was eliminated in the heat, and with the 4x100 metres medley relay he swam the heat and qualified for the final, but the squad finished an unfortunate fourth without him. In 1979 and 1980 Behrend won the national 100 metres butterfly title. In 1978 he won a European title with the medley relay, and in 1981 was fourth in the 100 metres event.

Behrend lost his way after retirement in 1992 and became a barman, truck driver, pool attendant, and manager of a pub, and worked in a large disco in Frankfurt. Later he ran his own IT company but then trained as a physiotherapist. Finally, he founded his own physiotherapist practice at Pegnitz. From 1996-2008 Behrend was chief coach at SSG Rödermark.
