Medley swimmer Mike Holthaus won a bronze medal in the 400 IM at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In the 200 he was seventh in the final. Four years later in München 1972 he failed to reach the final of the 400 IM. Domestically he earned 200 IM titles in 1968 and 1969, and the 400 IM in 1967-70 and in 1972. In 1968, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany. Holthaus later became a sports teacher in Bochum.
