Biography

In 1907, József Fabinyi twice broke the Hungarian 200 yard backstroke record, and also won the national championship. At the 1908 London Olympics, he won his heat in the 200 metres breaststroke, but failed to reach the final after finishing last in his semi-final. Fabinyi obtained a chemical engineering degree in 1910 and two years later went to work in the factory of Rimamurányi Vasmű Rt. in Ózd, and from 1919, until his retirement in 1948, he worked as a director of the Ózd Iron Factory. During his time in Ózd, Fabinyi was involved with several local sports associations. He also developed several patents and wrote many articles. He moved to Budapest in 1948 and worked as a consultant at KGMTI. He died the following year, and was buried at Farkasrét in Budapest, before the family later moved his ashes to Ózd, and buried them next to his wife. During World War I, Fabinyi served as a captain in the artillery.
