Between 1962 and 1975, swimmer Sándor Szabó competed for Bp. Spartacus SC. He was the best Hungarian breaststroke swimmer of the late-1960s and early-70s, winning nine individual championships at 100 and 200 metres, and one in the 4x100 medley relay. Szabó broke several national records, and was the first Hungarian to swim the 100 meters breaststroke under 1:10. As a member of the national team, he participated at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, competing in the 100m breaststroke and medley relay on both occasions. His best result was his eighth place as a member of the relay squad at München. Szabó competed in the 1973 World Championships at Belgrade, and the 1974 Europeans at Vienna. He finished his active career in 1975, but had started coaching while still competing. He graduated as a coach in 1976 and then ran a swimming school at his home club.
