Biography

Silvia Persi was a swimmer who was the best Italian freestyler in the period 1980-1990. She won 75 Italian championships between individual and relay events over a period of 13 years. Specializing in short freestyle distances (50, 100, 200, and rarely 400 metres), she won the Italian title in the 50 and 100 freestyle for seven consecutive years. In 1980 in Udine she broke the Italian record in the 100 freestyle, lowering it by half-a-second (59.10 to 58.60). She also broke the 200 freestyle record twice in 1984 (2:03.41 / 2:03.17). Persi competed at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, helping Italy make the medley relay final both years.
