Women’s water polo made its Olympic début at the 1920 Antwerpen Games with two teams from the Hollandsche Dames Zwemclub (Dutch Ladies’ Swimming Club) playing in an exhibition match. Ada Bolten was one of the 14 competitors who took part in the match, with the game finishing in a 2–2 tie, with women not competing in the sport again until the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Four years later Bolten was part of the Dutch quartet that swam in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay at the 1924 Paris Games. Her brother Wim also swam for the Netherlands at the Paris Olympics.
